MASINDI, UGANDA; The management and staff at Masindi Hotel in Masindi district were on Sunday engulfed in grief and shock after a British tourist mysteriously died in her guest room under yet-to-be-known circumstances.
The deceased identified as Ms Katelia Khushid Banu, 37, is said to have collapsed and died at around 12 am on Sunday, January 29, about four hours after she booked into the hotel.
Katelia and her relatives travelled to Uganda on January 16, 2023, and spent some time in Kampala until January 29, 2023, when they travelled to Masindi.
One of the employees at the hotel speaking on condition of anonymity said Katelia checked into Masindi hotel together with her nine relatives around 8 pm on Sunday after travelling from Kampala as tourists from the United Kingdom.
The worker adds that soon after being cleared for check-in, Katelia reportedly entered room number 11 where she would spend the entire night and later embark on the planned itinerary today morning.
However, at around 11:30 pm her relatives who were still outside heard her screaming for help from the bathroom. They responded quickly and found her on the floor.
Relatives say Ms Katelia told them she slid on the floor shortly after dressing up after taking a shower, before eventually passing out a few moments later.
Mr Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said police recorded statements from both the relatives and the hotel workers as investigations into the mysterious death kickoff.
“She told them that she had taken a shower and slid on the floor shortly after dressing up. Her relatives supported her and she sat outside with them before asking them to take her back to her room, where she collapsed and died,” Hakiza said.
The deceased’s body was by press time conveyed to the city mortuary pending a postmortem.
