Thugs rob businessman Shs50m at gunpoint in Arua

Abiriga left his shop at about 8 pm together with two female workmates carrying Shs50 million in a bag headed for his home when the attack happened.

ARUA, UGANDA: Police in Arua district are investigating an aggravated robbery of Mr Mohamad Abiriga, a prominent businessman who was Monday night attacked by unknown thugs and robbed of Shs50 million at gunpoint.

The businessman is the proprietor of Abiriga and Sons Enterprises, a franchise located at Rhinocamp Road in Arua City.

According to West Nile Region Police Spokesperson Ms Josphine Angucia, Abiriga left his shop at about 8 pm together with two female workmates carrying Shs50 million in a bag headed for his home when the attack happened.

Ms Angucia explains that “Before reaching Air Japan Trading Centre, Abiriga dropped one of his workmates and proceeded with another to the same trading centre where he stopped at the shop of his mother to pick her up en-route home.”

“Immediately after opening the driver’s door, two men on a numberless Bajaj motorcycle arrived, opened the co-driver’s door and removed the bag containing the money.”

The businessman then struggled to overcome the criminals but he was further shot in the arm as they overpowered him and took off with the bag containing the money.

At the time of writing the story, Mr Abiriga had been rushed to Arua Regional Referral Hospital to receive medical care and treatment as investigations into a case of aggravated robbery continues at Arua police.

Ms Angucia however urged people not to move with “huge amounts of cash on their bodies as this may expose them to the risk of being robbed.”
