LIRA, UGANDA: The Lira City East Deputy RCC Enock Wandera has commended the councillors for the formation of the Lira City East Area Land Committee in the recently concluded council meeting saying this will streamline the processing of land titles for residents.

“There has been no area land committee for a period of abouts two year in Lira City East Divisions and now that our team of area land committee, good councillors have approved some people in the area land committee at least obtaining land title will not be a problem,” said Mr Wandera while addressing the media after a full council meeting held on Monday, April 24th 2023.

He added that for instance if you are going to do a value addition and you need to put up a plant processing and in case you have land title it is more valued than setting up in an area without land title.

“I would like to thank our good councilfor coming up with an initiative of approving some members in the area land committee because many people have been coming to our office and they were talking about the creation of area land committee,” said Deputy RCC Wandera.

The speaker of the Lira City East council Hon. Daniel Alyela ruled that the matter be taken to secret voting since there was contention between the previous name given by the Mayor in the council and the present name that was tabled by him before council for approval.

When the speaker took the members of council to a voting session due to the two conflicting lists, out of 46 councilors who registered in tha attendance list who were eligible to vote, Akello Mazabo got 31 votes against Auma Susan Neima who got only one vote .

One vote was declared by Boney the clerk to council. However, 14 members did not vote including other members who marched out in protest of the speaker’s ruling on voting for names not included in the Mayor’s list.

During the council session in his presentation ,the mayor proposed five names of Okelo Odwar Vincent as chairperson Area and committee who hails from Ayago ward,Ayoo Lawrence of Boke ward Auma Susan Naima from Ireda West, Onoo John of Iwal ward and Akello Lydia from Telela who was rejected from the onset by hon councillors because of her age.

Mayor Geoerge Okello Ayoo in his speech to the media after the council meeting, rejected the council voted name of Akello Mazabo as illegal because she wasn’t in his list. He retaliated that ‘he does not know Akello Majabo and he knows of only four members who will be taken to Lira City council for final approval.

Marthi Onyanga of Bar-onger ward said he was the one who proposed the name of Akello Mazabo and that he has the copy of the letter introducing Mazabo to the maor written by Muslim community therefore she is legally known by council as witnessed in the secret voting guided by the speaker.
