MAYUGE, UGANDA: Police in Mayuge district is actively investigating the mysterious death of a rape suspect who was found lying dead inside a police cell at Mayuge Central Police Station on Wednesday.
The deceased identified as Ntende Benard, 18, alias Dan, a boda-boda cyclist and resident of Magunga village, Imanyiro sub-county in Mayuge district was reportedly arrested on Saturday, April 22, before detaining him in the cells at the Central police station.
Busoga East police spokesperson SP Diana Nandawula confirmed the report and said that the deceased was arrested last week after raping an anonymous lady from the same residence.
“Yes, he was arrested on April 22, 2023, and detained in our cells at Mayuge CPS after raping a lady from the same residence. He was a boda boda cyclist, but unfortunately, he was found lifeless in police cells on Wednesday morning,” SP Nandawula said.
Ms Nandawula added that the deceased boycotted eating when he was arrested, which could be one of the causes of his death.
“He reportedly refused to eat any food and unfortunately he was found dead in police cells,” said Ms Nandawula, adding that at the time of his death, Ntende’s file had already been submitted to the resident state attorney for perusal and was due to appear in court.
