BUGIRI, UGANDA: Police in Bugiri is actively investigating the murder of Mr Tenywa David Kazungu, the Bugiri district inspector of schools by unknown assailants over the weekend.

The deceased, a brother to Dr Waiswa Kazungu of Mulago Hospital and Makerere University, and State House official Justine Kazungu reportedly went missing from his farm in Bugiri District, according to Police and family accounts.

Relatives of the deceased led by his daughter reported a case of a missing person yesterday (Monday) at Bugiri Central police station under case reference 43/29/5/2023 after their person went missing on Saturday.

Upon getting this information, police kicked off a search and managed to recover the deceased’s car Toyota Premio which he was using and was parked at Bugiri central police station, before discovering the body of Kazungu today in a pit latrine at his farm.

Busoga East police spokesperson SP Diana Nandawula confirmed the incident amidst emphasizing that they are hunting for two men who have been working at Kazungu’s farm located in Nandereba village, Kapyanga Sub-county in Bugiri district to assist police in investigations.

“We have started hunting for two men who have been working at the farm of Bugiri district inspector of schools Mr Kazungu who are suspected to have knowledge about his disappearance and later being killed. Our preliminary findings indicate that the deceased left his family in Busongola cell on Saturday and went to his farm where he met the duo before he went missing that very day,” SP Nandawula said.

However, Ms Nandawula says that residents of Nandereba village told police about the disturbing smell from the pit latrine found at the deceased’s farm and police managed to recover his body from the latrine before conveying it to Bugiri district hospital mortuary for autopsy.

“Today, residents of Nandereba village informed us about the persistent disturbing smell from the latrine at Kazungu’s farm and upon visiting the area, the body was recovered from the latrine and it was taken to Bugiri hospital pending postmortem as investigations into the murder continue,” Nandawula said adding that at least three people had been arrested to assist in investigations as a search for others continues.

Speaking to DailyExpress, Mr Kabambwe Benard, the municipal inspector of schools in Iganga municipality condemned the gruesome murder and urged responsible authorities to thoroughly investigate the murder of their colleague.

“It’s very unfortunate, we have lost our colleague in Bugiri district to the hands of the kidnappers. We call upon security to deeply investigate to ascertain the cause of this incident since it’s worrying that many people are being killed in connection to minor issues these days,” Mr Kabambwe said.

Meanwhile, DailyExpress has understood that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of shillings 50 million from Kazungu’s family but in vain.

By press time, Tenywa’s body had been taken to Bugiri Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
