NAKASONGOLA, UGANDA: At least five people have been confirmed dead and several others injured in a fatal accident that occurred at Migyera in Nakasongola District along Kampala-Gulu highway on Friday morning.

The 4 am accident which occurred at Migyera town council involved a bus registration number UBB 538K belonging to California bus company, an Isuzu D-Max registration number UBK 688C and a Fuso box body registration number UBC 209A.

According to ASP Sam Twinemaziima, the Savannah region police spokesperson, the bus transporting pilgrims to Namugongo, is reported to have left Arua at 9:30 pm on Thursday for Kampala but rammed into a truck.

“Preliminary information indicates that the driver of the bus that was coming from Gulu side heading to Kampala direction, about half a kilometre to enter Migyera trading centre, rammed into a broken-down Fuso body which was also facing Kampala direction. The bus again knocked another motor vehicle registration number UBK 688C Isuzu  D-Max Killing four passengers in a bus and injuring 24 passengers,” ASP Twinemaziima said.

He noted that also among the dead was one Alex Muwanga, a mechanic who was repairing the broken-down Fuso.

Peter Thoriek, who was travelling in another bus, said: “By the time we reached Migyera, we found Police using a grader to evacuate the bodies that were trapped in the bus,” he said.

He said the crash claimed the lives of four people on the spot and several survivors were evacuated to different medical facilities.

Thoriek said the bus knocked the truck that was carrying charcoal at the back as it negotiated to overtake the bus.

However, reports also indicate that the truck had no reflectors at the back, something which might have led to the crash.

Photos shared on social media showed the wreckage of the bus crashed to nearly scrap material with fast responders and survivors stranded at the scene.

Twinemaziima said the deceased bodies were conveyed to Nakasongola Health Centre 3  mortuary for postmortem examination as inquiries into the exact cause of the accident continue.
