Kassanda policeman shot dead by armed gunmen in robbery incident

The deceased identified NO.52590 CPL Olaya Joseph was attached to Kiganda police station in the central Ugandan district.

KASSANDA, UGANDA: Police in Kassanda District are actively investigating a case of aggravated robbery and murder in which yet-to-be-identified gunmen shot dead one police officer after robbing a mobile money shop on a Monday evening.

The deceased identified as CPL Olaya Joseph (NO. 52590) attached to Kiganda Police Station in the central Ugandan district succumbed to bullet wounds after he was shot by the armed gunmen whom police were trying to pursue after the robbery incident at Kyakitanga Village Manyogaseka Subcounty in the Kassanda District.

According to Ms Rachael Kawala, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, the three (3) men wielding guns on a motorcycle stormed a mobile money shop belonging to a businessman identified as Janvier Fils Kalongo on Monday evening and stole property worth an unspecified amount of shillings before fleeing the scene.

“…on June 19, 2023, at around 5:40 pm, three armed robbers entered a mobile money agent shop/soda depot owned by Bonani Janvier Fils in Kalongo, Mubende District. The robbers stole various items of unidentified value and fled the scene on a motorcycle.,” said Ms Kawala.

Kawala explained that upon receiving the information of the robbery attack, the area police led by the officer in charge at Kiganda police where the deceased was attached immediately booked out to pursue the robbers and have them arrested.

During the pursuit, the suspects shot CPL. Oloya, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.

“Our task teams, led by the district Police commander (DPC) of Kassanda, have visited the scene of the crime and recorded relevant statements to aid in the ongoing investigations,” Ms Kawala said, adding that a motorcycle Reg.UDX 755C Bajaj Boxer Red in Color belonging to the suspects has been recovered.

“We want to assure the public that our task teams are on the ground and we are doing everything within their means to have the suspects involved identified and apprehended,” she added.
