KAMULI, UGANDA: The territorial police in Kamuli are investigating the alleged murder by shooting of a 30-year-old fisherman at Budaali, Kyamatende landing site, Kagumba subcounty in Kamuli district in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Busoga North police spokesperson ASP Micheal Kasadha confirmed the report and identified the deceased as Jackson Lutaya, a resident of Nabitalo B, Kibuye Parish, Kagumba Subcounty in Kamuli district and he has been the vice chairperson of Nabitalo Beach Management Unit (BMU).

“We are investigating the murder by shooting of a 30-year-old fisherman in an incident that occurred today at Kyamatende landing site, Kagumba Sub-county in Kamuli district at around 6am.

The deceased has also been the vice chairman of Nabitalo Beach Management Unit,” ASP Kasadha said in a Saturday statement.

According to ASP Kasadha, preliminary findings suggest that the deceased together with other five members were on an operation against  illegal fishing, before he was allegedly shot by a farm guard in the area.

“It’s alleged that when the suspected illegal fishermen sighted the boat on which the team were sailing, they made an alarm suggesting that they had been attacked by robbers. This alerted the local farm  guards that allegedly responded and opened gun fire leading to the death of Lutaya on spot,” the police spokesperson said in a Saturday statement.

ASP Kasadha confirmed that detectives from Kamuli Central Police Station responded to the scene and took the body to the hospital mortuary as inquiries into the matter goes on. In the statement, ASP Kasadha didn’t reveal any information if there was any suspect arrested in connection to this matter.

“Detectives from Central Police Station have responded to the scene and further inquiries are ongoing,” Kasadha said before calling upon the general public to be calm citing that security has taken over investigations into the matter adding that suspects shall be apprehended and prosecuted.

Meanwhile, police called upon the general public to always work with security in fighting criminality amidst condemning the incident of shooting which took a life.
