KAYUNGA, UGANDA: A section of Christians at Bugonya Church of Uganda in Kayunga District have vowed never to pray from the church again unless it is cleansed after a couple was caught red-handed having sex near the pulpit on the altar.
Bugonya Church of Uganda is located in Bugonya village, Kayonza subcounty, about 35 kilometres away from Kayunga Town.
According to eyewitnesses and residents in the church neighborhood, the ungodly act happened on Tuesday at around 8 pm when the lovebirds who are not church members sneaked into the church before indulging in the act.
Bugonya Village Chairman Mr George William Kanda said the suspects included a 23-year-old male Catholic and resident of his village who sneaked into the church with an unidentified female Muslim through a window.
“They accessed the church through the windows since the doors were shut down,” Kanda told this publication on Wednesday.
Leaders of the church in Kayunga District’s Kayonza Sub County now say they have entered an unspecified number of days of fasting and prayer following what they described as “a shocking sinful act.”
Kanda added that the man despite being just 23 years is married with two children while the woman is said to be staying with her mother in Bugonya Village after divorcing her ex-husband with whom they were staying in Kitimbwa Town Council, according to local authorities.
“When the official wife red-handedly caught them naked, she raised an alarm that drew residents to the scene. The two were arrested amid condemnation from residents. A headgear belonging to the woman and a T-shirt for the man are being kept at the LCs office as exhibits,” Kanda said.
“The owner of the T-shirt is well known to everyone in the village,” he added.
According to the Village Chairperson, a case of promiscuity has been slapped against the suspects since they were found half-naked and trespassing in God’s house. However, he set the pair free saying that “the LC court will convene soon to hear the case.”
By Thursday morning, DailyExpress learnt that the man had fled from his home and his whereabouts were unknown. “A case does not rot. He will answer for his sin anytime he comes back,” Kanda said when asked to verify if the suspect had fled the area.
Christians Speak out
Bugonya Church leaders who spoke to DailyExpress on Wednesday said they have entered an unspecified number of days of fasting and prayer following what they described as “a shocking sinful act” as they seek to cleanse the church of the atrocity.
According to the Church Lay leader, Mr Aaron Komugisha, they are also organizing a ceremony during which the clergy from the district will gather to pray for the church before it resumes operations.
“A number of clergy have since visited the church and they are shocked,” he said, adding that “the couple should repent and seek God’s forgiveness.”
Ms Beatrice Ajwang, the Kayunga District Officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department confirmed hearing about the incident but said the case had not been reported to any police.
