NTUNGAMO, UGANDA: Police in Ntungamo District are holding Moses Buyinza, the driver of late businessman Apollo Nyegamehe, popularly known as Aponye over his involvement in the fatal road crash that led to the latter’s death.

Aponye died on the spot last Thursday after the car he was travelling in rammed into a stationary Fuso truck at Itojo along the Kabale-Mbarara highway in Ntungamo district, western Uganda.

Other occupants of the vehicle who included Aponye’s brother and the driver survived with injuries and were rushed to the nearby Itojo Hospital before later being transferred to Mbarara Regional Hospital for further management.

Now in the latest development on Tuesday, Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson Mr Samson Kasasira said Aponye’s driver is now under police custody on charges of reckless driving which led to his boss’ death.

“The driver is being held at Ntungamo Central Police Station on charges of causing death due to reckless driving. The case file is awaiting the resident state attorney’s perusal and advice,” said SP Simon Kasasira on Tuesday evening.

He added; “We are still making consultations. He was discharged from hospital on Sunday.”

According to Kasasira, “Buyinza sustained a cut on the head which caused some bit of harm but was never serious. The scene was revisited and well-documented. So, now the file will be taken to the state [attorney] for perusal.”

The police publicist added that they had identified the owner of the stationary Fuso Truck registration number UAZ 767D FUSO truck which was loaded with Irish potatoes before Aponye’s V8 Land Cruiser, registration number UBF 300Z rammed into it, although the truck driver is said to be on the run.

“We will get to know who the driver was. Investigations are ongoing. The owner of the vehicle was identified and he presented the documentation to show ownership of the vehicle. We have tasked him to identify the driver so that we hunt for him,” he said.
