KAMPALA, UGANDA: President Museveni on Monday received a brief from former Prime Ministers Dr Ruhakana Rugunda and John Patrick Amama Mbabazi on the Russia-Ukraine peace mission talks held last month in two warring countries.

The peace mission talks were aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict that has negatively affected the whole world economically.

“The Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and the Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi briefed me today on the recent visit to Ukraine and Russia with the other African Heads of State. I could not attend because of my isolation and recovery from Corona,” said Mr Museveni in a Monday evening tweet.

He added; “However, our position remains clear, that the war must end through a peaceful process of dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. This war is affecting Africa, threatening world peace, not to mention the sanctions that are affecting many sectors like marine transport, banking etc.”

During last year’s emergency session of the UN’s General Assembly to vote on the Ukraine Crisis, Uganda was among the 35 countries which abstained or voted for neutrality, a decision that was taken to serve the interests of the two conflicting countries.

Between 16th and 18th June 2023, Dr. Rugunda who represented President Museveni on behalf of Uganda was among the delegation of African leaders who met and held separate peace talks with Ukrainian President, H.E Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin with an intent to end the war by peaceful means.

The delegation of African leaders from seven countries was led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
