Security guard shoots woman dead at Bugolobi market

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Police in Kampala are currently investigating circumstances under which a private security guard shot and killed a businesswoman in a tragic shooting incident at Bugolobi market, Nakawa Division on Friday evening.

The guard identified as Aijuka Arode attached to Security Plus Company LTD allegedly shot and killed Ms Mutesi Zainabu 48 years of age, 48, who has been operating a drink and merchandise store within Bugolobi market building.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, it is alleged that on July 28, 2023, at approximately 9 pm, a distressing altercation occurred between a security guard and the deceased businesswoman leading to the former releasing a bullet in defence.

“During the unfortunate confrontation, the security guard allegedly moved a distance of about three meters and fired a single shot at the store where the victim was situated,” ASP Owoyesigyire said in a police statement.

He added that the victim (Mutesi Zainabu) was critically injured and promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, she tragically succumbed to the injuries she sustained.

The Deputy KMP spokesman revealed that immediately started a manhunt for the killer and managed to arrest him this morning (Saturday) and is now being detained at Jinja Rd police station.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the Police observed that the suspect had fled with his rifle. However, through diligent efforts, we were able to apprehend the suspect today in the Morning , and he is currently detained at Jinja road Police. We have also successfully recovered the suspected murder weapon,” Owoyesigyire stated.

He added; “Our dedicated team is committed to pursuing this case diligently, and we assure the public that every effort is being made to uncover the truth behind this regrettable incident. Further details will be provided as soon as possible, as the investigation progresses.”

By press time, the body of the deceased had been conveyed to City Mortuary Mulago for Postmortem examination.
