BUIKWE, (UG): The Territorial Police in Ssezibwa Region and Lugazi CPS have in custody four (4) suspects scheduled to appear in court for the alleged illegal possession and dealing in forestry products.
The 4 suspects include; WO Ntumwisho Temteo, a 51-year-old military driver and resident of Mbuya Army barracks, Serunja Jordan, a 23-year-old, resident of Lugazi Kitenga, Sserwada Steven, a 20-year-old, resident of Kayanja Mukono and Kyomugisha Robina, a 38-year-old, resident of Kinyoro zone in Lugazi Municipality.
According to Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, the quartet was arrested last week on Monday, July 31, 2023, while loading timber in Mabira forest into a UPDF truck registration number H4DF 334.
“The truck was eventually impounded and parked at Lugazi CPS,” said Enanga in a police statement on Tuesday afternoon.
Enanga further cautioned that illegal possession and dealing in forestry products is a very serious offence and vowed that police will continue to enforce the new Presidential directive meant to preserve the environment and biodiversity.
“…we are going to ensure strict action is taken against the suspects. The operations are ongoing to help protect our biodiversity and preserve the livelihoods to those who are reliant on regulated forest resources,” he warned.
President Museveni recently ordered the cancellation of all licenses and permits issued to individuals and companies to harvest timber from forests.
