OBONGI, (UG): A fisherman in Obongi District died by drowning after a hippopotamus attacked the canoe on which he and a colleague were riding on River Nile waters last week.

The deceased identified as Mungu Anyongi is said to have drowned in the river on 3rd, August 2023 at about 23 00hrs where they had gone fishing using a wooden canoe with the now survivor (Atabuga Munasiri)

According to preliminary information, it is alleged that the two who were in the water using the canoe boat interfaced with a hippopotamus which threatened them, and out of fear, they jumped into the River to try and save their lives.

However, unlike the survivor (Atabuga) Anyongi could not swim and when he jumped into the water, he drowned and died in the water instantly according to a report by the police.

Obitare Francis one of the community members who discovered the body floating on the water reported the matter to the neighbours who then alerted Obongi Police to swing into action.
