Mukono, (UG): Mukono High Court Judge, Justice David Matovu has remanded Dr Mathew Kirabo the fugitive murderer convicted of killing his girlfriend, Desire Mirembe to Luzira Prison as proceedings in his sentencing over the murder case await.
Kirabo who had gone on AWOL for several months was earlier this week arrested in Kenya’s capital Nairobi following an extensive operation by the Interpol in the neighbouring country.
Yesterday, police confirmed plans were underway to have the runaway convicted murderer extradited to Uganda and be arraigned in court for a sentencing ruling over the murder charges.
By Friday morning, Kirabo who was clad in a white T-shirt and grey trouser with handcuffs on, appeared before Mukono High Court Judge, Justice David Isabirye who sent him behind Luzira coolers awaiting further management of in the murder case.
Kirabo is accused of killing Desire Mirembe 19, on July 10, 2015, whose body was discovered in Lugazi sugarcane plantations in Buikwe district on July 11, 2015.
The accused (Kirabo) confessed to the murder and was charged at Jinja High Court, remanded at Nalufenya prison in Jinja.
The case was then moved to Mukono High Court on the instructions of the then principal judge Yorokamu Bamwine after the state complained that the crime had been committed in the Mukono jurisdiction.
On October 6, the High Court in Mukono finally started hearing the case after 6 years, and on November 3, 2021, Kirabo mysteriously absconded from the court which prompted the state to ask for a court order compelling his sureties to pay Shs 50 Million each and the case then proceeded without the suspect.
In 2021, the High Court in Mukono ruled that Kirabo had a case to answer in the murder of Desire Mirembe after the state adduced evidence from 15 witnesses to support the case against the suspect Kirabo.
However, after listening to all submissions and evidence by the prosecutors, Justice Kaweesa reasoned that they raised serious allegations and therefore Kirabo should come and defend himself over the claims levied against him on February 7, or prepare to make their defence on the case.
Accordingly, the judge noted that there was sufficient evidence that warrants Kirabo to prepare to defend himself and give an explanation for the accusations.
For example, the confession video tabled before court as evidence showed that before the murder, Kirabo had picked Mirembe from Ark hostel in Katanga where she was residing before they headed to the Lugazi side.
In May 2022 Justice Henry Kawesa Isabirye convicted then fugitive Kirabo of murder following a months-long trial in his absentia.
