Who is Evelyn Lagu?

Born Evelyn Nakabira, Lagu was born on June 1, 1982, in modern-day Kalungu district which was part of Masaka. She grew up with her aunt in Mityana district following the death of her parents.

She went to Aga Khan, Mityana SS, and Pride SS Mityana for her O’ Level education, and later St. Peter’s Busubizi for her A’ Level, which she finished in 1999.

Lagu started her music career as a back-up singer for some of the top artists including Carol Nakimera, Halima Namakula, Ragga Dee, and Mampi from Zambia. She has also played with the Mustard and Flash bands.

Some of her famed songs as a solo artist include among others Ogumanga, Ngukuwadde, Silkyatya, and Kasita Bakuleka.

Lagu also ventured in movie acting under a company known as Zubairi Family, where she was a member.

In June 2021, Evelyne Love was flown to Turkey to conduct a kidney transplant but medical experts stopped her from the procedure reasoning that her health status was not suitable for it.

She was hence advised to continue taking dialysis as they reasoned that a transplant could lead to her earlier death than expected. Family members say Evelyne Lagu always had to go through a dialysis process twice a week.

It is further reported that the singer passed away upon arrival at home after taking dialysis. She reportedly took one last long hard breath and died instantly.

At the time of her untimely demise, Evelyn has been preparing to host her charity concert dubbed “Evelyn Love Charity concert” which was meant to take place at Papaz Spot in Makindye on 28 October 2023.
