Kampala, (UG): In a thrilling display of basketball prowess, the JKL Lady Dolphins emerged victorious as the Women’s National Basketball League (NBL) Champions of 2023.
Celebrating their third National Basketball League championship in four seasons, the Lady Dolphins secured a decisive 68-50 win over the KIU Rangers in Game 5 of the finals.
Center Hope Akello shone as the MVP of the finals, leading the charge for JKL with a remarkable double-double performance of 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Akello’s contributions were crucial in the Lady Dolphins’ resounding victory. Rita Imanishimwe and Brenda Ekone added 15 and 13 points, respectively, amplifying their team’s dominance over the Rangers.
Right from the start, JKL set the tone, leading 18-11 at the end of the first quarter with Ekone igniting the offense early on.
The Lady Dolphins continued their commanding play in the second quarter, outscoring the Rangers 20-12 to establish a comfortable 38-23 lead at halftime.
As the third quarter commenced, JKL unleashed an impressive 11-0 run, creating an insurmountable gap for the Rangers to overcome. KIU’s Rose Mary Amaniyo managed to contribute 14 points, while Perus Nyamwenge and Ines Kanyamunza added 11 points each for the Rangers.
However, their efforts were overshadowed by the relentless performance of JKL.
Having topped the regular season standings, the Lady Dolphins concluded their triumphant campaign despite an early loss in Game 1 of the finals.
Responding swiftly, JKL rallied and clinched four consecutive victories to secure the championship title.
Akello’s exceptional performances not only earned her the MVP of the finals accolade but also the Defensive Player of the Season and top rebounder awards.
Her remarkable achievements were further recognized as she was selected for the Team of the Season alongside notable players such as Amaniyo, Nyamwenge, Uwineza, and Ageno from the Rangers.
With their stunning display of talent and teamwork, the JKL Lady Dolphins have firmly established themselves as the dominant force in the Women’s NBL, solidifying their status as champions and leaving a lasting mark on the league.
