KCCA FC sack head coach Sergio Traguil after poor start

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA FC) Tuesday evening announced the departure of head coach Sergio Daniel Moniz Traguil, after just four months on the job.

The Uganda Premier League club confirmed in a statement that the imminent departure of the Portuguese tactician is premised on a family-related issue that requires his attention.

“Sergio has a family issue that requires his immediate attention and thus both parties have agreed to mutually part ways,” the club statement read in part, adding that Traguil’s Assistant, Luis Manuel Correira Guerreiro also leaves with immediate effect.

The decision to part ways with Traguil was made by the club’s board of directors on Monday, with six of the nine members voting in favour of the Portuguese’s dismissal.

Sergio Traguil was appointed as the head coach of KCCA FC on 12th June this year, taking over reigns from Jackson Mayanja, who had assumed the coaching role on an interim basis since April 19th, 2023.

Since his appointment, KCCA have struggled this season, failing to win a single match in the Uganda Premier League, suffering four defeats to BUL FC, Maroons FC, Express FC and Kitara FC.

The Kasasiro Boys were taken back out of the CAF Confederation Cup, getting dumped in the second preliminary round by Abu Salim of Libya.

The Portuguese head coach has been facing a number of challenges during his time at KCCA, including selecting his best players and dealing with a divided dressing room.

Last week, he suspended two senior players, Derrick Ochan and Moses Waiswa, for undisclosed reasons.

In his short spell, KCCA FC lost to URA FC in FUFA Super Eight before their elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup by Abu Salim of Libya in the first preliminary round.

Traguil has previously been coach of Hearts of Oak (Ghana), Singida Big Stars (Tanzania), CD Lunda Sul (Angola), Vilankulos (Mozambique), Mirbat SC (Oman), Kabuscorp SC (Angola), Santa Rita CFC (Angola), and most recently, Township Rollers FC (Botswana) among others.

In the meantime, KCCA said Jackson Magera will take charge of the team on interim basis and is expected to appoint his own technical team in the coming days.

“First team coach Jackson Magera Kaddu takes charge of all First team duties as the interim Head coach with immediate effect,” KCCA announced.

“We wish Magera and the team all the best of luck and call upon all the stakeholders to give the team the necessary support.” The statement concluded.
