Desire Mirembe Murder: Mathew Kirabo gets 30-year-jail term for killing lover

Mukono, (UG): Mukono High Court Judge Henry Kaweesa has sentenced Dr Mathew Kirabo to spend 30 years in jail over the murder of his lover Desire Mirembe who was then a medical student at Makerere University.

Mirembe who was then 19 years was reportedly killed in a gruesome incident that occurred on July 10, 2015 and her body was discovered in Lugazi sugarcane plantations in Buikwe district on July 11, 2015.

The murder was implicated to have been masterminded and committed by Mathew Kirabo, her then-boyfriend who indeed confessed to the murder and was charged at Jinja High Court in May 2022.

Now in a grand ruling delivered on Tuesday, November 21, State Prosecution led by Happiness Ayinebyonna had initially asked Justice Henry Kaweesa to opt for a death sentence for the convict saying he killed a 19-year-old girl’s bright future.

However, considering that Kirabo had already spent time on remand, the Judge sentenced him to 29 years, 10 months and 3 days in prison.

Kirabo’s sentencing marks a significant development in a case that had seen him evade capture despite being convicted in absentia by the Mukono High Court last year. He (Kirabo) was arrested on September 12, 2023, by Kenya Interpol and extradited to Uganda.

On September 15, 2023, Mukono High Court presided by Justice David Matovu remanded Kirabo- awaiting further management of his murder case.

Justice Matovu remanded him upon execution of a warrant of arrest as a convict for the offence of murder, contrary to sections 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act pending sentencing proceedings.
