33 die, 156 injured in Christmas accidents

Kampala, (UG): At least thirty-three people (33) died in road accidents registered between December 25, 2023 and December 26, 2023, the Traffic Police have said.

SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson of the Traffic Police Directorate in his briefing to journalists on Wednesday revealed that fewer cases were registered this year with 33 fatalities recorded and 156 nursing serious injuries.

“During this season, we registered fewer road crashes compared to last season because of the interventions that started much earlier,” he said.

Mr Kananura noted that among the fatalities registered included pedestrians and riders who constituted 85% of which most were upcountry.

In Kapachorwa, for example, 5 people died in a single fatal crash, which occurred on Tuesday at 04:00 pm at Towei Corner Kapsindi along Kapchorwa – Mbale Road, involving a motor vehicle reg. No UBD 074J Prado Land Cruiser.

The accident claimed the lives of 05 people, including four children and their mother, and injured four others including the driver, all occupants in the same vehicle.

Compared with the Christmas season last year, Traffic Police records show there has been a reduction from 55 people who died last year to 33 this year.

The number of injured victims has also reduced from 212 last year to 156 this year, according to traffic police information.
