Mama D: The Ugandan chef cooking her way into Guinness World Records

Celebrated Ugandan chef Dorcus Bashema Kirabo, alias Mama D, has been cooking away since December 23, as she works to break the Guinness World Record for the longest solo cooking session.

The longest cook-a-thon (individual) record is 119 hours, 57 minutes and 16 seconds and was achieved by Alan Fisher (Ireland) in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023.

Fisher ousted the previous record holder, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci, who had seized the crown in June.

Mama D says she is gunning for 121 hours and wants to break the record in Uganda.

She started her challenge on December 23, 2023, in Kira, Wakiso district at 10:00 am and has set her target to mark 121-plus hours to break the current Cookathon record.

Many people have gathered at Mama D’s home in Kira, Wakiso district, outside the capital Kampala, waiting to cheer her feat (and take selfies) if she pulls it off.

By 8:00 am yesterday (December 26), she had clocked 61 hours.
“66 hours, 52 minutes and counting,” she tweeted on Boxing Day after recording her 77th meal.

“It is the people like you that keep us going,” she told a group of people who visited her kitchen, adding, “We will not give up till Friday.”

Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) boss, Lilian Arjarova has expressed interest in Mama D’s challenge.

“Tomorrow I will be joining the rest of the people who are supporting Uganda’s Chef Mama D as she attempts to break the Guinness World Record Cookathon,” said Ms Arjarova on Christmas Day.

By Wednesday evening at around 4 pm, Mama D again tweeted saying; “Just one more push!.. and obviously more cooking..”
