UPL: Wakiso Giants end KCCA’s winning streak, Express, NEC win as league’s first round ends

Wakiso, (UG): KCCA FC faced a disheartening 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wakiso Giants FC in a dramatic conclusion to the first round of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League 2023/24 season,

A goal in each half secured maximum points for the hosts, leaving KCCA FC with a bitter taste as their four-game winning streak came to an end at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium in Wakiso District.

The first half witnessed an unfortunate error from KCCA’s Rogers Atube, gifting Kimera Kenneth an opportunity to break the deadlock in the 24th minute.

Earlier, in the 16th minute, Atube missed a chance to convert Usama Arafat’s free kick, heading wide with the goal seemingly at his mercy.

Despite KCCA’s offensive attempts, the first half concluded with a 1-0 advantage for Wakiso Giants FC.

The second half saw further challenges for KCCA, with Wakiso’s skipper Hassan Ssenyonjo and defender Ssenkungu cautioned for dangerous play.

In the 58th minute, KCCA’s Usama missed a crucial chance to level the tie after a beautiful setup by Shaban.

At the hour mark, Wakiso extended their lead to 2-0 with Samson Kigozi tapping home from a spilled ball by KCCA’s goalkeeper, Derrick Ochan.

Wakiso’s goalkeeper received a caution for time-wasting antics, adding to the intensity of the match.

The Kasasira Boys pushed hard for a goal, dominating the hosts’ half in the second stanza. In the 81st minute, Joel Sserunjogi’s cross narrowly missed Shaban’s head, and in the 84th minute, Saidi Mayanja’s attempt, capitalizing on a defensive lapse, flew inches wide.

A glimmer of hope emerged in the dying moments as Ashraf Mugume halved the deficit with a well-struck free-kick, but it proved too late for the Cityzens to mount a complete comeback.

The final score stood at 2-1, marking KCCA FC’s unfortunate end to the first round.

In other Saturday results, BUL FC and Mbarara City FC settled for a 1-1 draw, Express FC dominated Gaddafi FC with a 3-0 victory, and NEC FC secured a 2-1 win against Arua Hill SC.

Gerald Ogweti scored for BUL FC, Joseph Akandwanaho netted for Mbarara City FC, and in Express SC’s win, Isaac Wagoina (38′ – penalty), Alpha Thierry Ssali (40′), and Andrew Kawooya (79′) found the back of the net.
