Kampala, (UG): The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has taken over the security detail of House of Prayer Ministries boss Pastor Aloysius Bugingo, in the wake of an attempted assassination of the pastor.

While addressing believers at Caanan Land during Sunday service prayers, Col Fred Mwesigye, the commander of UPDF operations in the Kampala Metropolitan Area revealed that security had been beefed up at the church in Makerere Kikoni – Kampala, and Bugingo’s residence in Namayumba-Wakiso.

“We shall do our best to ensure security for the church, that’s why I am here,” Col Mwesigye emphasized, adding; “We are in charge of security at the church here, at the Pastor’s residence (Namayumba-Wakiso) and Salt TV offices in Rubaga.”

Mwesigye explained that beefed security is to ensure such things don’t happen again.
“That is what we are doing now. Be calm. We get challenges but we are giving our all to protect you.”

The UPDF boss’ statements came after Pr Bugingo during the same prayer service requested the UPDF officers to assure believers that security had been tightened at the church.

“Our followers may fear to gather here at church since I am being hunted by criminals,” Bugingo said as he preached on Sunday at Canaan Land.

The outspoken ‘Man of God’ used Sunday’s service to mourn the death of his departed bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza, who he said “died a hero.”

The attempted attack on Pastor Bugingo which claimed the life of Muhumuza happened on January 2, 2024, after unknown gunmen shot multiple times at his car in Namungoona, a Kampala suburb.

Bugingo who told mourners that for many years, he has lived in fear for his life due to consistent death threats, hailed the late Muhumuza saying he sacrificed his life for him to live.

He, however, vowed to continue to preach the word of God without fear.
