National Unity Platform (NUP) Principal, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has won the Audience Choice Award in New York for his movie, dubbed Bobi Wine the People’s President, which entails his journey to Uganda’s political scene.
The movie which has received already a warm reception abroad since its release in 2022, was awarded at the Cinema Eye Honors 2024 in New York, U.S.
The movie was first recognized as the best feature documentary of the year 2023 at the 39th International Documentary Association Documentary Award.
Bobi Wine said on Saturday that he didn’t expect the accolade because they ‘didn’t set out to make an award-winning film’, but just wanted to document their story, showcasing their fight for freedom in Uganda.
“We did not expect this because we never set out to make an award-winning film, no! We just wanted to document our story, a story of the people of Uganda fighting for freedom and democracy,” he said.
Bobi said he was humbled by the fact that his movie got international recognition, saying that they are going to be ‘a little bit safer’ now that they are certain the world is watching what is happening in Uganda.
“We are just humbled that our story has received or has been to this level of international recognition. With this award and the attention that comes with it, we believe that we are going to be a little bit safer now because we know that the world is watching what is happening in Uganda,” he added.
Bobi further said that the true heroes are the hundreds of men, women, and children who have paid the ultimate price in the struggle for freedom in Uganda.
“Those that are lying in unmarked graves scattered over the country, the political prisoners, and those that are missing,” he noted.
