Lent Season: Christians to begin fasting on Ash Wednesday

Kampala, (UG):- Christians across the world will on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, commence the lent season; a Spiritual Journey of Reflection and Renewal that will last for 40 days, climaxing with the Easter Weekend in late March.

In the Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent, is a period of spiritual significance observed by millions worldwide characterized by prayer, repentance, and fasting, culminating in the joyous celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead.

In Uganda, the Christian faithful is expected to observe the Lent period with self-sacrifice, prayer, and other religious activities leading up to Easter, the day believed to be when Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

The Symbolism of Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the tradition of marking the foreheads of believers with ashes in the shape of a cross. This act symbolizes repentance, mortality, and the desire for spiritual renewal. The ashes, typically derived from the burnt palm fronds of the previous year’s Palm Sunday, serve as a poignant reminder of human frailty and the need for God’s mercy and grace.

During the Ash Wednesday mass, the Priest inscribes ash on the foreheads of Christians, a symbol of human mortality as “having been created using dust and to dust we shall return.”

The Ash also symbolizes the Christian action to grieve for the death of Jesus Christ. The Ash is usually prepared by burning pals used during the previous Palm Sunday.

While addressing the media on Tuesday, the eve of Ash Wednesday, Fr Joseph Mukiibi, the spokesperson of the Kampala Archdiocese urged Christians all over the country and the world at large to attend mass and pray for the grace of humility.

“If a Christian has this value, then others will emulate,” Fr Mukiibi emphasized before he called upon Christians to fight all evils that offend eternal truth for the love that culminated into the eternal God.

“Christians must therefore not be lured to self-denial, interest, and self-mastery.

As Christians around the world gather to observe Ash Wednesday and embark on the Lenten season, they do so with hearts open to transformation and renewal.

Through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity, believers seek to draw closer to God, deepen their faith, and embody the timeless values of love, compassion, and service.

May this season of reflection and repentance be a source of spiritual growth and inspiration for all who embark on this sacred journey.
