Govt gifts Omua Chiefdom with Shs700m Cultural Centre

Stakeholders between Government, UEGCL and Omua Chiefdom exchange project documents at the commissioning of the multi-million culture centre poject in Zombo District

Zombo, (UG):- The Ministry of Energy and Minerals Development acting through the implementing agency, Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited stationed at Nyagak 6.6 Mini Hydropower project have gifted Omua Chiefdom a whopping over 700 million shillings cultural centre in the West Nile Zombo District.

The multi-million shillings project has been contracted to Tesla Technical Services and will be executed on a land size of approximately one acre and will be supervised by the resident civil engineers of UEGCL and Zombo district local government to monitor and evaluate compliance emphasizing quality to achieve value for money.

The Cultural Centre project which will be filled with mainly a cultural hall and offices will be situated at the chiefdom land in Cwaramara village, Paidha Town Council. Omua Chiefdom is one of the chiefdoms in the West Nile which comprises of Paidha sub-county, Paidha Town Council, Abanga sub-county and Nyapea sub-county in Zombo District.

This community cultural hall and office was just one of the many requisitions pushed by the chiefdom that offered their land that served as a cultural ritual site for the construction of the hydropower plant to embrace development and foster growth of the subjects spread across the four lower local government administrative units.

UEGCL the agency representing the government in the execution of the hydropower project is fast-tracking the processes and execution of all the earlier identified corporate social responsibilities for the community members as the clock ticks towards the commissioning of the project.

In an event graced by the Zombo District top leaders, the cabinet and subjects of Omua Chiefdom, UEGCL pronounced itself on the long and overdue promise of the community cultural centre and offices as it officially unfolded Tesla Technical Services as the contractor to execute the project and together with the cultural and political leaders handed the site to Tesla Technical Services to commence work soon.

The district leaders applauded UEGCL representing the line ministry for the kind gestures exhibited through the fulfilment of the corporate social responsibility of construction of boreholes, now the community cultural hall with offices attached and the others to be implemented at Amei, Oruku and Otheko health centre 111 respectively.

Tesla Technical Services Ltd has been implored to fetch available recommended local materials from the local community to improve their standards of living above all ensure value for money in the project as the district and Royal leaders of Omua Chiefdom vowed to closely monitor the progress of work at the site.

Eng Nicholas Agaba the representative of  UEGCL who spoke to DailyExpress revealed the genesis of the project and introduced Tesla Technical Services as contractor of the project.

Eng Agaba said; “Part of the project land we acquired included land that was used by Kaal Omua chiefdom as the cultural ritual site we made compensation for the land as part of the compensation package we agreed to build the community hall for the chiefdom and we got funding from the ministry of energy and procured a contractor.”

Eng. Charles Sali of Tesla Technical Services assured UEGCL, district and  Cultural leaders of quality work in the site handed over to them.

“We are promising to bring quality and value for money for that so much money they have given us to deliver the project and we shall not compromise any quality,” Sali assured.

The district leaders who with much optimism envisaged transformation of the community urged the chiefdom and the subjects to utilize the facility to better the lives of community members through sensitization and community policing to promote education and other forms of development. 

Ms Grace Atim, the Deputy RDC of Zombo district iterated how the community hall can transform communities.

“We expect to gain a lot from this community cultural hall use it to sensitize the subjects to send children to school de-campaign teenage pregnancy and denounce the cultural practices promoting it,” Atim told DailyExpress

Chief Emmanuel Angiya II of Omua chiefdom notified  UEGCL to induct the government to always consider them as shareholders in the 6.6mw Nyagak mini hydro power plant project even after completion of the project and should effect electrification of the areas enclosing the Royal place and the neighboring communities.

Chief Angiya commended UEGCL for living up to their promises and reiterated the need for value for money in the project.

“Let the civil work and contractor comply with the project timeline of 9 months the quality and sizes should not be compromised let it comply with the architectural designs and plans,” Chief Angiya told the contractor, district leaders and UEGCL during the handover of the site.

Nyagak 6.6 MW Mini hydropower project construction stands at 95 per cent as it draws at a double quick march closer to the commissioning in the near future.
