Victoria University unveils UBTEB programmes to enhance practical skills for immediate employment

Kampala, (UG):- Uganda’s pioneer transformational varsity, Victoria University Kampala has yet again unveiled a solution that will see many of its learners attain practical skills that offer immediate employment and certifications for further education at higher levels.

According to the University post via its official X account, the new certificate courses which are fully accredited by the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) come as a relief to learners who probably may have not secured direct entry into A’level or University due to their performance in the O’ and A’ Level exams, respectively.

To solve this pressing issue, the University says the two-year academic programmes which are purely practical and skill-based will enable learners upon completion to not only secure immediate employment but also offer a foundation for furthering education, including diploma and degree courses.

“We have identified a pressing issue: Many students’ futures are compromised by financial hurdles or an educational emphasis on grades over competencies at O & A level. Some students graduate from certain universities, with no skills to navigate the world of work. To address this, we are launching highly practical and hands-on UBTEB-accredited certificate programmes focused on skill development and practical knowledge,” VU said in a post.

“These programmes not only prepare students for immediate employment but also offer pathways to further education, including diploma and degree courses. They are also ideal for graduates seeking to enhance their skill set,” the Univesity post reads further.

The accredited UBTEB courses available on offer at VU include; Certificate in Hotel and Institutional Catering, Certificate in Clearing and Forwarding, Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Certificate in Journalism and Media Studies.

For Science and IT enthusiasts, the University is offering a Certificate in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering and Agriculture studies under the same arrangement, with practical skills guaranteed upon completion of the two-year programme.

By emphasizing hands-on training, Victoria University aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the skills demanded by the job market, contributing significantly to reducing unemployment in our country.

All this has been championed by the University Vice Chancellor, Dr Lawrence Muganga who has for long been a gem in transforming the country’s education sector with innovative strategies that have so far helped bridge the gap between the institutions and the job market.

Dr Muganga shot into the headlines during the COVID-19 era when he led Victoria University to continue learning throughout the lockdown as many tertiary institutions closed down temporarily due to the pandemic.

Under his stewardship, VU introduced the VClass, a digital blended learning platform which allowed students to learn remotely and virtually. Not only lectures are offered through this world-class system, but students are also able to do; online tuition payments and online exams.

The VC also spearheaded the process that ensured that Victoria University acquired a full charter from the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE), thanks to his continued efforts in revolutionizing the education sector in the country.
