Uganda Premier League: SC Villa edge out Express in derby, NEC, UPDF secure crucial wins

Uganda Premier League, Saturday, March 9
• SC Villa 1-0 Express
• Gaddafi 0-1 NEC
• UPDF 2-0 Busoga United

SC Villa Saturday emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win over bitter rivals Express FC in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) at Wankulukuku Stadium.

The match, which saw poor attendance despite the intense rivalry, witnessed Charles Lwanga’s lone goal in the first half, securing a league double for SC Villa over Express this season.

Despite Express FC’s valiant efforts, including close attempts by Hussein Ssenoga and John Assiimwe, they couldn’t find the equalizer.

The victory injects fresh energy into SC Villa’s title chase, positioning them seven points behind league leaders Kitara. With Kitara having played two more games, SC Villa eyes any potential slip-ups from the frontrunners.

Express, under new coach Baker Mbowa and his assistant Mike Mutyaba, faced a disappointing start, failing to capitalize on opportunities against a depleted SC Villa side. The loss prompts Express to regroup swiftly to reclaim their winning form.

Meanwhile, UPDF FC clinched a crucial 2-0 victory against Busoga United in a relegation battle. Brian Kalumba and Ezekiel Katende were the heroes for UPDF, each scoring a goal to end their ten-game winless streak in the league.

Despite Busoga United’s efforts, including attempts from Jeremy Matata and Emmanuel Ajo, UPDF’s solid defense led by goalkeeper Richard Anyama thwarted any comeback hopes.

In another league fixture, NEC secured a 1-0 win over Gaddafi, courtesy of Cromwell Rwothomio’s eighth goal this season.

Rwothomio’s fine form propelled NEC to victory, positioning them six points behind league leaders Kitara. The loss keeps Gaddafi precariously above the relegation zone, emphasizing the significance of every upcoming fixture in the Uganda Premier League.

As the league progresses, teams brace for intense battles on the pitch, each vying for supremacy and survival in Uganda’s top-tier football competition.
