All Africa Games 2023: Uganda Hippos get perfect start with victory over Nigeria

Accra, (GH):- Uganda’s U20 Men’s National Team, affectionately known as the Uganda Hippos, kickstarted off their campaign at the All African Games 2023 with an impressive victory over Nigeria.

The match, which took place on Thursday, saw the Uganda Hippos triumph 2-1 in a closely contested encounter.

The game kicked off with both teams displaying their determination to secure an early lead. It was Uganda’s Arafat Usama Kizza who broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, showcasing his clinical finishing skills with a precise shot from close range after being set up by Allan Oyirwoth.

However, Nigeria responded swiftly, equalizing just two minutes later from a corner kick, with Sadiq Muhammad Isiyaka rising high to head the ball into the net. The match remained evenly poised as both teams sought to gain the upper hand.

In the second half, Uganda continued to apply pressure, with their defense led by skipper Rogers Torach remaining resolute against Nigeria’s attacking threats.

However, Uganda suffered a setback when defender Ronald Madoi sustained an injury in the 71st minute, leading to his substitution by Cyrus Kibande.

Despite the setback, the Hippos persisted in their pursuit of victory, and their efforts paid off in the dying minutes of the game.
