Vipers’ Karim Watambala earns last minute call to join Uganda Cranes squad

Kampala, UG: Vipers SC midfielder Abdu Karim Watambala has received a call-up to join the Uganda Cranes squad for two international friendly matches against Comoros and Ghana, scheduled for 22nd and 26th March 2024, respectively, in Morocco.

This announcement comes as a result of an injury to Bobosi Byaruhanga, ruling him out of these crucial fixtures.

Uganda’s Football Governing body, FUFA, disclosed in a Wednesday statement that Watambala’s inclusion was necessitated by Byaruhanga’s unfortunate injury setback, which sidelines him for the upcoming games.

“Vipers SC midfielder Abdu Karim Watambala has been summoned to join the Uganda Cranes squad that will play two international friendly matches against Comoros,”  a statement from FUFA read.

“Watambala replaces injured Bobosi Byaruhanga who has been ruled out of these two games.”the statement ended.

This summons reflects Watambala’s exceptional form this season, where he has been instrumental for Vipers SC, contributing two goals and two assists in 17 league appearances.

Watambala, renowned for his midfield prowess, joins fellow Vipers teammates, goalkeeper Jack Komakech and winger Milton Karisa, in the national squad. His elevation to the international stage is a testament to his consistent performances and contribution to his club’s success.

Replacing Byaruhanga, who currently plies his trade with Austin II in the MLS Next Pro in the United States, Watambala steps into a familiar role within the squad, having previously shared the pitch with his former teammate at Vipers SC.

In another development, Charlton Athletic FC defender Nathan Asiimwe George, who features in England, has also earned a call-up to the Uganda Cranes squad earlier this week.

Known for his versatility across the defensive line, Asiimwe George adds depth and flexibility to the national team setup.

The Cranes are set to face Comoros on 22nd March 2024 in their first encounter, followed by a clash against Ghana on 26th March 2024.
