Fallen RDC Pius Alitema to be honoured with Road and Hall in Zombo

A section of the clergy and community members bid farewell as Rtd Lt Col Pius Alitema's Body leaves for the ancestral place in Maracha district

Zombo, (UG):- The Zombo District Council has resolved to designate a road in Zombo Town Council and a hall at the District Headquarters in memory of the diligent services of the late RDC, Rtd Lt Col Pius Alitema to the people of Zombo.

Alitema, 67, who became RDC of Zombo in 2022 died last Friday, March 8, 2024, as he was being rushed to Holy Family Hospital Nyapea in Zombo district following a blood pressure surge.

The resolution to honour the late RDC was unveiled in the presence of hundreds of residents of the district, family members and friends who turned up to pay their last respects and bid farewell to the late RDC passed during a special council sitting of March 14, 2024, which after a requiem mass in Zombo catholic parish followed.

Ms Grace Oleru, district councillor and Vice-chairperson of Zombo district local government submitted candid prayers to the council to remember the Late Lt Col Alitema infinitely saying; “he had an enormous impact in our area a road should be designated in his memory in Zombo town council and since he had a lot of interest in improving school enrollment retention and academic performance a hall or classroom block be named in his memory.”.

The Political, cultural and Religious leaders in Zombo who spoke to DailyExpress and eulogised the late Lt Col Alitema decorating him with the astonishing virtues of a democrat, diplomat, patriotic, silently aggressive advocate for development, highly proficient, disciplined God-fearing person.

Posthumously, Bishop Raphael Wokorach of Nebbi Catholic Diocese pronounced Alitema as an ambassador of the Holy Family in the Catholic Church because he supported several mass weddings across the diocese with support from the Peter Clever community. 

Hon Songa Lawrence Biyika, the Member of Parliament for Oraa Constituency sounded an appeal to President Museveni Kaguta to consider promoting the late Lt.Col. Alitema posthumously given his contribution to the security and development of Uganda.

“My appeal to the president is that Lt Col.Pius be promoted even after his death that will be important to honour him for his contribution of serving this government in various capacities as we read from his CV,” Hon Biyika articulated during an interview with DailyExpress.

Meanwhile, the community members of the Zombo District organised the Agwara dance to bid farewell to the late RDC as the body was transported to the ancestral home in Maracha District which symbolizes a person of high calibre in the Alur community leaving behind the deceased’s love and passion for this particular traditional dance.

Mrs Rose Alitema, wife to the late RDC remorsefully applauded the people of Zombo for honouring and exceedingly loving their RDC and prayed for the construction of a decent residential house for the RDC or else the family of the late will take on to build it.

Mrs Alitema further urged the relevant appointing authorities to consider the promotion of Grace Atim Deputy RDC to Full RDC as a replacement for her now-deceased husband.

Lt Col Pius Alitema, born on October 7, 1957, was the second child in the family of 11 children.

The late RDC was formerly an officer at the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) where he served for more than 30 years at different levels before joining Zombo as RDC in 2022.

Col Alitema will be laid to rest on Saturday, March 16 2024 in Kijomoro Village, Pabura Parish in Maracha District.
