Man, 20, punches colleague dead in bar brawl over girl

Mayuge, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Mayuge District have arrested and detained a 20-year-old Shamiru Wakabi, on allegations of boxing his 26-year-old colleague Edirisa Wabwire which resulted in the latter’s death.

Busoga East Police Spokesperson, SSP Diana Nandawula confirmed the tragic incident which occurred at a local bar in Mayuge Town Council in the wee hours of Monday at around 1 am.

According to preliminary police investigations, it is alleged that Wakabi, a resident of Kinyara zone, Mayuge TC while at Sobarz Bar and Lodge with Wabwire developed a misunderstanding based on love affairs with a yet-to-be-identified girl.

During the fight, Wakabi boxed Wabwire and fell unconsciously before being rushed to Muwanguzi Medical Center where he died on arrival.

Police told this website that an investigation into the matter is ongoing to ascertain the genesis of the matter and confirmed the arrest of Wakabi now faces murder charges.

“We have arrested Wakabi Shamiru on the charge of murder after involving in a fight with Wabwire Edirisa who later died on arrival at a health centre. The duo while at Sobarz bar and lodge had a physical fight after an eruption of a misunderstanding resulting from a girl lover,” SSP Nandawula said.

However, DailyExpress has established that the incident did not happen at the bar but at the U-turn which is near the bar, just after the duo left the bar where they were boozing.

The deceased’s father Mr Aliyi Wabwire, a resident of Kikubo village, Buwaaya Sub County in Mayuge district told this website that the news of the death of his son reached him at 4 am on Monday, before urging the government to intervene and ensure that justice can prevail.

“I received news about the death of my son at around 4 am and the news came through my neighbour. I am requesting the government to help me with support because I don’t have anything to do now, and I also call upon the security department in Mayuge to ensure that justice in this matter can prevail,” Wabwire said.

The chairperson of Tse-Tse zone in Mayuge Town where the said bar is located, Mr Yahaya Ikoba condemned the behaviors of involving in smoking drugs and taking alcohol irresponsibly by the youths, something he says has since caused loss of lives in joking things.

“It is suspected that the incident resulted from a girl and headsets but we don’t know exactly what transpired. I understand that he was boxed once before falling unconscious, I urge youths to be responsible and avoid things which take lives in joking ways,” Ikoba said.

The body of the deceased was taken to Mayuge Health Centre IV for postmortem examination before it was handed over the body to relatives for burial arrangements as investigation into the matter continues.
