Chameleone’s elder brother Humphrey Mayanja dead

Humphrey Mayanja, the elder brother of singing brothers Jose Chameleone, Pallaso and Weasel Manizo is dead after months of battling cancer at the Mulago-based Uganda Cancer Institute.

Humphrey, in his late 40s, who underwent surgery in the United States was recently brought back to the country to get treatment while surrounded by family and friends.

The news of his passing came through on Saturday morning, throwing the Mayanja family into a sombre Easter weekend.

Humphrey’s cancer battle

Humphrey last year narrated the horrific story of how he ended up in the hospital in the U.S starting from mini-faints to instant fevers.

“This is not a pleasant picture. I didn’t take it. But while at Schiphol airport I kept falling asleep and waking up to intermittent fevers. I didn’t feel well and I have never felt like that before. The flight was delayed but after 10 hrs of lay over I was finally on flight to Logan airport. I got home safe(or so I thought). I got some rest but when I woke up I realized that my stomach was inflating itself every 5 mins,” Humphrey said in a social media post last year.

“This was so painful that I could not walk or eat anything. ‘My Best friend’ decided to drive me to the ER, I got diagnosed and a decision was made that I be retained for further analysis. They immediately inserted a Nasogastric tube (a very irritating process) inside me. Believe me or not basokoola kakika mu lubuto nange n’entya. Anyway, it all ended in surgery.” he added.

The treatment, Humphrey said, involved inserting a nasogastric tube inside his stomach to get rid of the infections inside, but the doctors ended up carrying out a full surgery.

Humphrey, along with second-born Henry Kasozi (and their sister Josephine), are the only three of the Mayanjas who were not into entertainment and music recording.

The rest; Joseph Mayanja (Chameleone), Douglas Mayanja (Weasel), Pius Mayanja (Pallaso) and the late Emmanuel Mayanja (AK 47) all made their name in the music industry.

In a family where the siblings in showbiz are often finding in the news for the wrong reasons, Humphrey played the elder brother, often bringing his young siblings together whenever they fell out.
