Man, 33, arrested for impersonating MK Movement, defrauding over 200 in Gulu

Gulu, (UG):- The Directorate of Crime Intelligence in coordination with CID in Gulu District have arrested and charged to court, one Iguma Mubarak, 33, for impersonating and obtaining money by false pretence from over 200 unsuspecting people in Elegu town while posturing as a member of the MK Movement now Patriotic League of Uganda.

According to Police Spokesperson Mr Fred Enanga, the victims defrauded by Iguma in Elegu included mostly boda boda riders, taxi operators, market vendors, salon and bar operators, after he promised that he would link them up to Gen. Muhoozi Kaneirugaba (Gen. MK) for support.

“Documents recovered on him, upon search, show he made false statements, while using the MK Movement Constitution and Membership Cards, which he issued to the victims, after them paying membership fees,” stated Enanga while addressing the media fraternity at Police Headquarters, Naguru on Tuesday.

Police said efforts are also in place to trace for Iguma’s accomplice, called Abdul Karim Matovu, who is on the run, and commended the Gulu CID for the outstanding in apprehending the fraudster.

“We would like to commend the D/CI, and Gulu CID, for their outstanding work. The arrest will serve as a great warning to fraudsters and con persons, who use false identities and misrepresentations, to defraud innocent victims. He was charged before the Chief Magistrates Courts in Gulu,” said Enanga.
