Kenya and Rwanda emerged as the frontrunners from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Zone, showcasing notable improvements in their global standing in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, April 4th, 2024
Despite Uganda maintaining its stronghold at 92nd place globally, clinching the top spot within the CECAFA Zone with 1242.15 points, Kenya seized a significant advancement by climbing four places to secure the 107th position worldwide.
With 1191.24 points, Kenya now stands as the second-highest-ranked team within the CECAFA Zone, showcasing remarkable progress in their football endeavours.
Kenya’s commendable ascent in the rankings finds its roots in a series of impressive performances, particularly in recent international friendly matches.
The team’s dominance was evident as they secured convincing victories against hosts Malawi with a resounding 4-0 triumph and Zimbabwe with a commendable 3-1 victory.
Their stellar performance extended to the 4-Nations tournament, where they emerged as deserving champions, solidifying their reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the football stage.
Joining Kenya in the upward trajectory, Rwanda also celebrated a noteworthy rise in the FIFA rankings, ascending two places to claim the 131st spot globally.
With 1112.44 points to their credit, Rwanda now stands as the fifth-ranked team within the CECAFA Zone, further amplifying the region’s football prowess on the international platform.
Meanwhile, Tanzania maintained its position at 119th place, while Sudan held steady at 127th place in the global rankings.
Burundi, positioned sixth within the CECAFA Zone, secured the 140th rank, followed by Ethiopia at 145th place. However, South Sudan experienced a slight setback, dropping by one place to settle at 167th place globally.
In contrast, Djibouti and Somalia faced formidable challenges as they grappled with lower rankings, positioned at 192nd and 199th places, respectively.
Notably, Eritrea remains unranked, reflecting the ongoing efforts required to enhance its football infrastructure and performance on the international stage.
The latest FIFA rankings underscore the dynamic landscape of football within the CECAFA Zone, with Kenya and Rwanda spearheading a wave of progress and excellence.
