8-year-old boy dies of suspected alcohol poisoning, parents arrested

Otuke, (UG): Authorities in Otuke District in northern Uganda have arrested the parents of an 8-year-old boy Ojede Emmanuel who died from suspected poisoning after drinking laced alcohol.

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon at Awee village, Agweng parish, Alango Sub-County.

Richard Onyanga an area LCI of Awee village said on the 28th of April 2024 Otiti Aldo the father of the deceased identified bought waragi worth 9000/= and drunk with his two children namely Ojede Emmanuel 8yrs old and Akullo Cinderella aged 4yrs old. 

However, after consumption, both children vomited seriously before Ojede died, while Akullo was quickly rushed to Aliwang Mission Hospital for medication.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson said the territorial police in Otuke District are holding two suspects (parents of the children) in line for suspected murder by poisoning at Otuke CPS.

“Police later visited the crime scene and statements recorded from witnesses. An exhibit of some waragi which remained was recovered and to be taken for analysis at Government laboratory in Wandegeya Kampala. Two suspects arrested to assist in the investigation,” Okema said.

Okema described the incident as shocking and advised parents to desist from sharing alcohol with their children.

“It is shocking if a whole father can buy waragi and share with the children, his motive is yet to be established since he’s in cells and investigation going on, we call for calmness from the relatives, the matter in question is already in police hands, we pledge the law will takes it’s course against him and any other person who will be linked to the incident,” Okema adds.

By press time, the deceased body was conveyed to Orum Health Center IV for postmortem.
