Speaker Among urges preparedness for disaster amid Nairobi flood tragedy

Kampala, (UG):- In the wake of a devastating flood tragedy in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Annet Among has called for proactive measures to prevent and mitigate similar disasters in Uganda.

The recent heavy rains in East Africa have led to catastrophic floods, resulting in the loss of over 100 lives and significant damage to property and infrastructure.

Speaker Among led Parliament in paying tribute to the victims of the Nairobi floods and expressed solidarity with the affected communities across the region.

She emphasized the urgent need for preparedness and disaster management strategies to safeguard Ugandan citizens, especially those residing in flood-prone areas.

“Various parts in East Africa are witnessing devastating floods during the ongoing heavy rains,” remarked Speaker Among. “In Kenya, the rains have not only destroyed vast property and infrastructure but also claimed lives. I condole with my brothers and sisters in the region.”

The Speaker highlighted the current situation in Uganda, particularly in parts of Eastern Uganda such as Elgon and Teso sub-regions, where floods have already caused disruption to livelihoods and posed significant challenges to residents.

Ms Among stressed the importance of proactive measures to address the immediate impact of floods and to build resilience for future disasters.

“There is a need for us to prepare for any disaster that is forthcoming,” She emphasized, adding; “We need to get prepared for that disaster and ensure that our people don’t suffer the same fate.”
