Kampala, (UG):- President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Retired AIGP, Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Uganda Police, a position and role he takes with immediate effect.
Byakagaba, who recently retired from police now replaces former IGP Martins Okoth Ochola whose term expired in March and was not renewed for extension.
In the same line of appointments announced on Friday evening, the President also appointed AIGP James Ochaya, to deputize Byakagaba, replacing Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi, also with immediate effect.
AIGP Byakagaba brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the Counter Terrorism commander and Human Resource Director.
He also previously served as Ankore-Kigezi Zonal Commander under the Police leadership hierarchy.
His appointment, according to security experts is seen as a strategic move to bolster the country’s security apparatus.
The breaking news of appointing a new IGP and his deputy comes as a choking revelation to not only the country but even in the police hierarchy, especially those who long overdue thought Katsigazi would take on from his former boss within no time.
