PLU finally speak out after MP Mawanda goes to Luzira over corruption

Kampala, (UG):- The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a civic organization led by First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Friday opened up to the public on matters regarding its Director of Mobilization, Mr Micheal Mawanda who was arrested on Wednesday and remanded to Luzira on Friday on corruption-related charges.

Mawanda, who is also the Head of Disciplinary inside PLU and the elected MP for Igara East Constituency was arraigned before the Anti Corruption Court in Kololo on Friday, alongside two other legislators; who include Busiki County MP, Paul Akamba, and Ignatius Mudimi Wamakuyu (Elgon County) and a city lawyer Kirya Julius for allegedly diverting Shs3.4 billion meant for war loss compensation by the government to Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society for their personal use.

The Chief Magistrate, Ms Joan Aciro who listened to the charge sheet presented by State Prosecution remanded the group to Luzira until July 9, 2024, as the state conducts further inquiries.

Reacting to the developments surrounding one of the own, the PLU Secretary General, Mr David Kabanda Friday released a press statement addressing concerns of the jailed Igara East MP, saying as the group’s leadership, they stand with him and wait until the law takes it course.

“As the leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), we are aware of the arrest of Hon. Mawanda Micheal Maranga who is our Director responsible for Mobilization. In as much as PLU, in the strongest terms possible, condemns corruption, impunity and abuse of office, we also note that Hon. Mawanda is, under the law, innocent until proven guilty by a competent Court,” Kabanda, who is also the MP for Kasambya County (NRM) stated.

“We also trust that the law shall be applied uniformly and that all those involved in every manner of corruption shall be brought to book. In the meantime, we appeal to all PLU supporters to stay calm as the Law takes its course,” he added.

The PLU boss thanked His Excellency the president of the Republic of Uganda for the resolve in stamping corruption out of Uganda and pledged “total commitment to His Excellency the President as far as fighting corruption is concerned.”
