Guard, 38, arrested for raping, defiling patients at hospital

Gulu, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Gulu City West are holding a 38-year-old night guard arrested on allegations of rape and aggravated defilement.

Newton Acaye, a watchman attached to St. Philip Health Center II Kanyagoga, was arrested on allegations of rape and aggravated defilement of a female minor aged 15.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa West Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident, which happened on June 29, 2024, at 1 a.m. at the health facility where the victim was admitted as a patient. Mudong says the case has been registered under CRB 255/2024.

According to the preliminary reports obtained from the Victim’s count, “it’s alleged that on June 29, 2024, between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., the suspect picked the victim from the ward where she was admitted and took her outside to the Sentry Box at the entrance of the health facility.”

He started assaulting and threatening to kill her using a bow and arrow before raping her twice under serious threats. The suspect then, after raping the victim, chased her away, where she went to Kirombe Police Post and reported the matter.

Mr Mudong said police detectives headed by the SOCO visited the scene and documented it; statements from relevant witnesses were recorded; and suspects were arrested and detained.

The victim was subjected to PEP after the suspect was examined on PF24A, where he was found to be HIV positive.

According to Mudong, the investigators are actively compiling the case file before it’s submitted to the Chief Resident State Attorney for perusal and legal advice before the suspect is produced in court.

Under the Penal Code Act of Uganda, aggravated defilement can be punishable by life imprisonment or, at maximum, death.
