Amolatar, (UG):- The security arm in Amolatar District Wednesday foiled an organised peaceful demonstration by a pressure group of people over alleged mismanaged funds for road maintenance in the northern Uganda district.
The rowdy group of about 100 people mainly leaders from Sub-Counties on 3rd July 2024 at around 1100 hours within Amolatar Town Council organised and demonstration over alleged mismanagement.
Led by Felix Adupa Ongwech who had organised a peaceful demonstration, They alleged that some District officials in Amolatar have swindled an unspecified amount of money yet roads in the district are impassable.
They particularly single the rampant corruption in the district to the weakness of LC5 who is a political head of the district that Adupa Ongwec claimed connived with some technical team to misappropriate funds meant for service delivery.
“The problem is the chairman’s food is in the Technical team’s food. We have learnt that after misappropriating money meant for service delivery, the balance is shared among LC5 and his technical team,” Adupa Ongwec said.
He added that they have given police to investigate the allegations of abuse of office and corruption within seven days under GEF: 10/2024.
“After seven working days if no result is presented, we will again organize another demonstration at the District headquarters, lock their offices and hand over the keys to the RDC such that he delivers to the Ministry of Local Government.”
Francis Odoki Okello, the Resident District Commissioner of Amolatar said the demonstrators agreed to call off the demonstration and peacefully went back to their respective Sub-Counties.
“As head of security in the district, I and the DPC extended our commitment to handling the matter with urgent attention without any interference,” Okello said
Patrick Jimmy Okema Police spokesperson for the North Kyoga region confirmed that no violence was registered and the situation in the District remains normal and calm.
Okema encouraged some people who may be aggrieved not to take the violence away but to use dialogue with relevant authorities within their reach.
