One dead,13 admitted after eating poisoned chicken

Kole, (UG):- In a tragic turn of events, a man in Kole district has lost his life and 13 others were admitted at Lira Regional Referral Hospital for medical care after reportedly consuming a chicken carcass believed to have been poisoned.

The victim Kenneth Omara, a resident of in Te-amaga cell, Akalo -town council, along with his family, reportedly ate the chicken that had perished after eating the intestines of a suspected poisoned duck.

Preliminary reports indicate that Nelson Okwir, a neighbour, had borrowed a male duck for breeding purposes, but it is alleged that the duck was later poisoned.

The report further states that Okwir, intended to eat the duck and discarded its intestines, which were then consumed by several chickens.

Calvin Okuny, the brother of the deceased revealed that Omara and his family had cooked and eaten the dead chicken, unaware of its absent danger,

‘’After eating, Omara began to suffer from intense stomach pain and was vomiting blood, prompting him to seek help from a herbalist but tragically, he succumbed to his condition around 11 pm last night,’’ Okuny said.

Meanwhile, Ezekiel Awira, the LC3 chairman of Akalo town council, said other 13 individuals who had also ingested the tainted chicken were rushed to Akalo Health Center III and Lira Regional Referral Hospital for Medical Care following Omara’s death.

He expressed his concern over the incident, labelling it a total shame to the community and stressed the necessity of exercising caution when encountering sudden animal death,

‘’I urged the public to consult veterinary professionals to ascertain the cause before consuming any carcasses,’’ Awira said.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional police spokesperson said he had not yet received the report about the incident.

‘’An investigation would be launched to uncover more details,” Okema said.
