CAF mourns demise of Ugandan referee Peter Kabugo who collapsed during UPL match

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Dr Patrice Motsepe has joined the Ugandan football community in mourning the sudden passing of assistant referee Peter Kabugo, who collapsed during a Uganda Premier League (UPL) match at Wankulukuku Stadium in Kampala on Friday. 

The incident occurred in the 73rd minute of the match between SC Villa and UPDF, which was dominated by SC Villa, leading 5-0 at full time. The medical personnel quickly rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.

In a statement reflecting the sombre mood, Dr Motsepe, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and conveyed heartfelt condolences to Kabugo’s family, the Federation of Ugandan Football (FUFA), its President Moses Magogo, and the wider Ugandan populace. 

“CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Uganda Premier League match official, Peter Kabugo, who collapsed during a football league match at Wankulukuku Stadium in Uganda,” the statement read in part.

“The CAF President Dr Motsepe conveys his and CAF’s deepest condolences to the family of Peter Kabugo, Federation of Ugandan Football (“FUFA”) and its President, Moses Magogo and Ugandan people.”

“May Peter Kabugo’s soul rest in eternal peace,” Dr. Motsepe stated.

Kabugo, who served as the second assistant referee, was a well-respected figure in Ugandan football. 

Witnesses described him as appearing fit and engaged in the match until the moment he collapsed, prompting immediate concern from players and officials alike.
