Lira, (UG):- The Minister of Education and Sports, who is also the First Lady, Janet Kataha Museveni, has issued a caution to educational institutions in Uganda to stop offering courses that are not marketable and do not align with the current job market demands.

Mrs Museveni says such courses produce more unemployable graduates. “Unlike science courses, Higher Institutions of Learning should stop offering courses that make one unemployable even if they passed highly,” she said.

“Ensure that graduates are equipped with skills that are relevant and in demand, thereby improving their employability and reducing unemployment rates,” Mrs Museveni’s message read in part.

The First Lady’s speech was conveyed by Commissioner for Vocational and Technical Education, Ms Loy Abaine Muhwezi during the 10th Graduation Ceremony of 1748 students of Uganda Technical College (UTC) Lira held on Friday 22nd November 2024.

At the function, a total of 215 females and 1533 males graduated from different disciplines such as National Higher Diplomas and National Diplomas in building and construction engineering, water and sanitation, electrical engineering, architecture and other engineering disciplines.

The minister accordingly rallied graduates from different institutions of learning to create their own jobs other than relying on limited white-collar jobs.

The Principal UTC-Lira, Jacob Akunobere, equally reminded graduates to be innovative in whatever work they do outside school. “The world is competitive and I advise that when out in your different field, show to the world that you’re the best who have got appropriate knowledge,” Mr Akunobere said.

He lauded the government for its commitment to supporting the school with enough um resources that have greatly improved on student population.

The Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Lira City East Division, Stephen Odongo in his message urged people to utilise the available development brought by the NRM government
