Minister Akello orders probe into Sironko district over failed road repairs

Sironko, (UG):- The State Minister for Economic Monitoring Hon. Beatrice Akello has directed the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the Sironko District Engineering and and Production Department over failure to execute their mandate sufficiently.

The Minister and her team while inspecting the roads discovered that the district engineer had failed to rehabilitate six roads that were meant to be repaired in the last financial year using Shs1 billion from the Road Fund.

Andrew Wasukira, district engineer, explained that he has delayed working on the roads due to the heavy rains that have been in the district for over 1 year.

But the minister did not honour the engineer’s excuse and said that all the roads in the terrible state have been abandoned, and this is the second quarter of this year.

Hon Akello also visited the micro irrigation scheme in Mutufu town council which is not yet complete, she also inspected the Buhugu milk cooler that has not been operating for long blaming those who designed the project for not consulting the community which is now demanding maize mile because have no cows to sustain supply the milk cooler.

“The community members are now requesting a maize mill instead, as they lack the livestock needed to supply the milk cooler with sufficient quantities of milk for it to function effectively,” Hon Akello said.

The minister later visited the Buweri administrative house that has stalled at the foundation level for over 3 years at the cost of Shs 17 million. She also directed the state aunt corruption agency to investigate all the incomplete projects

Akello revealed that they have gotten information that the Wendi agents are conveying with the SACO leaders to solicit bribes from beneficiaries of PDM and Emyooga that they should be brought to book.

Dennis Ephraim Balwanireghe, the RDC Sironko blamed the civil servants for the shoddy in the district arguing that the government sends a lot of money into the district but the projects especially roads are impassable which he blamed on the district engineering department

Herbert Musika, the councillor for Nalusla sub county revealed that most of the roads are in a sorry state and even most of the projects that the government has put, its money has been put to waste and most of the civil servants have no will to work.
