Kampala, (UG):- The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Hon Betty Amongi Akena has lauded the Uganda Association of Women Lawyers (FIDA Uganda) for championing justice for women, children and vulnerable communities over the last 50 years.
Speaking at the celebration of the association’s Golden Jubilee on Saturday, December 7th at Serena Hotel in Kampala, Amongi said from providing legal aid and representation to advocating for gender responsive laws and policies, FIDA has constantly stepped on where the need is greatest.
“The work has ensured that the principle of justice, equality and dignity are not mere aspirations but lived realities for many,” said the Minister.
She added that there is strong partnership between FIDA Uganda and the ministry of gender, Labour and social development that has anchored in a shared vision; a Uganda where all citizens regardless of gender can exercise their rights, enjoy equal opportunities and live free without violence and discrimination.
“The partnership between the Ministry of Gender and FIDA Uganda has been instrumental in addressing Gender-Based Violence, advancing gender equality, and enhancing access to justice for survivors,” she said.
“We celebrate the trailblazing women who founded FIDA and their advocacy for transformative laws like the Marriage and Sexual Offences Bills. Congratulations, FIDA Uganda, on 50 years of championing social justice,” added Hon Amongi
The Minister also recognized that over the years, FIDA and the ministry of gender have worked hand in hand in uplifting the status of women and promoting Gender equality.
She highlighted one of the most notable collaborations being through various technical committees and platforms dedicated to addressing violence against women.
“These forums have enabled us to combine our respective strengths and expertise, ensuring that our policies are not only robust but also informed by real World experience and grassroots perspectives,” said Amongi.
