Kampala, (UG):- The Police in Kampala Monday said they are actively hunting for fugitive Police Constable (PC) Bahati Charles, who is accused of fatally shooting one Ssemwaka Julius and fleeing the scene near Nakasero State Lodge in Kampala.

The tragic incident occurred on December 23, 2024, along Sezibwa Road, leaving the community in shock.

According to police, PC Bahati allegedly shot and killed 32-year-old Ssemwaka Julius, the driver of a vehicle bearing registration number UAX 460C, under circumstances that remain unclear.

After the shooting, Bahati fled the scene with his service weapon, leaving law enforcement and the public scrambling for answers.

While addressing the press, Police Spokesperson, ACP Rusoke Ktuumat, confirmed the incident, saying, “We regret to inform the public of an unfortunate incident involving one of our officers. PC Bahati Charles is currently on the run after shooting and killing Ssemwaka Julius. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend him and ensure justice is served.”

The police are appealing to the public for information on Bahati’s whereabouts. “We urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of PC Bahati to come forward. All details shared will be treated with utmost confidentiality,” Rusoke added.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased is demanding answers and justice. “We don’t understand why a police officer, who is supposed to protect life, would take it in such a brutal manner,” a family member lamented during an interview.

PC Bahati, described by colleagues as a reserved individual, had served in the force for over five years. Investigators are now piecing together his motive for the shooting while continuing their search.

Kituuma have assured the public of their commitment to a transparent investigation. “This is a regrettable incident, but it will not shake our resolve to enforce the law, even when it involves our own officers,” he emphasized.
