Bulambuli, (UG):- The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Bulambuli, Hajjat Faheera Mpalanyi Bbosa, is at the center of a grave controversy following accusations of conspiring with Eastern Uganda Agriculture Uganda Limited to unlawfully seize land from over 400 local families.
The dispute that has left the displaced residents in shock and despair involves land previously sold by Mara Company to Chinese investors. Despite claims of legal acquisition, the affected residents assert they were never fully compensated for their land, and a court order was in place to prevent forced eviction.
Hajjat Faheera, who had promised a resolution of the matter in a scheduled meeting on January 14, 2025, summoned landowners to her office on December 31, 2024.
Instead of addressing their concerns, the RDC was seen on the disputed land with Mara Company representatives and Eastern Agriculture Uganda Limited, overseeing a staged handover ceremony where hired actors pretended to vacate the land voluntarily.
Following the ceremony, violence erupted as armed thugs destroyed homes and chased legitimate landowners off their properties. While the chaos unfolded, the residents were left stranded at the RDC’s office, unaware of the events transpiring on their land.
Despite the legal and official intervention, Faheera delayed meeting the displaced families, eventually dismissing their concerns and claiming the land was designated for investment under “presidential orders.” She instructed the residents to leave immediately, assuring them that their unpaid compensation would be followed up with Mara Company but issuing threats against their return.
Left homeless, The evicted families, left without shelter, have sought refuge in a local church, where they await clarity on their fate. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many accusing the RDC of betraying her mandate to protect the interests of her community.
In the meanwhile, human rights organizations and local leaders have condemned the RDC’s actions, demanding an independent investigation into the alleged collusion with Eastern Agriculture Uganda Limited. “This is a clear abuse of power and a violation of human rights,” stated one activist, emphasizing the need for accountability.
The displaced residents are now appealing to higher authorities, including President Yoweri Museveni, to intervene and ensure that the promises of Operation Wealth Creation, which aim to uplift local livelihoods, are upheld.
