Ssemakadde eulogizes Ssegirinya as ‘fervent activist’ of the marginalized

Kampala, (UG):- The Uganda Law Society (ULS) President, Advocate Isaac Ssemakadde Friday expressed profound grief over the death of Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya, whom he celebrated for his activism and commitment to the marginalized.

In a statement dated January 10, 2025, Ssemakadde highlighted the broader implications of Ssegirinya’s life and struggles whose life was marked by his relentless fight for justice, philanthropy, and dedication to serving the underprivileged.

“His life was cut short amidst legal battles that exposed the dark underbelly of our justice system,” read the statement.

“As we reflect on Ssegirinya’s life, we must acknowledge the grave consequences of allowing politics to distort legal processes. This approach undermines the rule of law, erodes legal excellence, and leaves vulnerable individuals open to abuse.”

Ssemakadde emphasized the Law Society’ts commitment to upholding unbiased legal institutions and protecting individual rights, calling on the nation to honour Ssegirinya’s legacy by working towards a more just Uganda.

“We commit to restoring faith in our legal institutions, upholding the law without bias, and protecting individual rights. Let us honour Ssegirinya’s legacy by striving for a more just Uganda, where the law is a shield of justice, not a tool of oppression,” he stated.

Ssegirinya, known for his activism, was often in the spotlight for championing causes that resonated deeply with his constituents. Despite facing numerous legal and health challenges, Ssemekadde noted that he remained steadfast in his commitment to public service.

He also commended the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among for her compassion, which allowed Ssegirinya to retain his parliamentary seat even as he battled serious health complications.

Ssegirinya, 37, died Thursday at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala at around 12 pm after spending an unspecified at the facility undergoing a series of treatments. He will be buried at Kadugala village in Masaka District on Sunday, January 15, 2025.
