CAF postpones CHAN 2024 to August 2025, hosts East Africa ‘not ready’

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially postponed the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, originally scheduled for February (next month) to August 2025.

The decision, announced Tuesday, January 14, came after CAF carried out a thorough evaluation of the ongoing infrastructure developments and readiness of the host countries Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Despite commendable progress in the construction and upgrading of facilities, CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts have advised that additional time is necessary to meet the required standards for hosting a successful continental tournament.

“However, the CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, some of whom have been based in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, have advised CAF that more time is required to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities are at the levels necessary for hosting a successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024,” the statement, copy of which DailyExpress has seen read in part.

citing advancements in the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure. Dr. Motsepe extended his gratitude to the presidents of the host countries—William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda—for their leadership and commitment to ensuring the success of the tournament.

“I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024,” Dr Motsepe said.

CAF emphasized that the postponement was made to ensure the quality of facilities and the overall success of the tournament. The additional time will allow for necessary adjustments and improvements to guarantee the event is of the highest caliber.

Despite the postponement, CAF said the official draw for the CHAN 2024 tournament will go on as initially scheduled and will take place in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, at 20:00 Nairobi time.

The draw, which will feature East African football giants; Hassan Wasswa (Uganda), McDonald Mariga (Kenya) and Mrisho Ngasa (Tanzania) will determine the groupings for the tournament, setting the stage for a highly anticipated competition in 2025.

CAF also confirmed that the exact dates for the start of the tournament in August 2025 will be announced in due course and assured fans and stakeholders that further details regarding the event schedule and logistics will be provided soon.

The TotalEnergies CHAN 2024, which features players who ply their trade in the domestic league, is expected to be a landmark event, not only for the host nations but for the African football community as a whole, as it showcases the best of local talent and contributes to the growth of football on the continent.
